Events

We offer several events every year with a focus on educating about lake issues and providing an opportunity for members to connect.  Our Annual Conference is usually held in March and rotates around different regions of the state (north, central, south).  Other events include both webinars and in-person workshops on topics like aquatic plant ID, water quality monitoring, grant programs, and watershed protection.  Please contact us if you there is a topic you would like to see covered or if your organization would be interested in helping plan an event.

Join Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership for a webinar on HABs. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are often linked to external nutrient inputs from anthropogenic phosphorus (P) pollution or atmospheric nitrogen deposition. However, the increasing occurrence of blooms without these inputs has shifted attention to internal drivers. Recent research highlights internal P loading from sediments, driven by changing stratification patterns, as a key trigger. We present examples from wilderness to hypereutrophic lakes, where HABs occur or intensify due to anoximixis. Using high-frequency sensors and traditional monitoring, we compare bloom timing and intensity with factors such as hypolimnetic P accumulation, mixing frequency, and cyanotoxin production. Our findings emphasize the need to understand anoximixis as climate change alters lake stratification and accelerates oxygen depletion. These changes may lead to more toxic blooms in affected systems and trigger blooms in lakes previously thought to be resistant. Register for the webinar here: Webinar Registration - Zoom

Please join us on Thursday, October 16, at Noon to learn how YOU can help our Indiana General Assembly Representatives and Senators learn about your Indiana Lakes Management Society.

Topics will include identifying and meeting your local legislator, familiarizing them with the goals and objectives of ILMS, and to prepare you with the tools and information required to advocate for ILMS positions on legislation important to the health of our Indiana lakes and watersheds.

Join us for a walk and talk with Lisa Milton, director of Natural Resources at Newfields in Indianapolis.  She will share information on the challenges of managing a 35-acre gravel quarry lake adjacent to the White River on the grounds of the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields.  There is extensive erosion along the berm that separates the lake from the river and water quality data collected by the White River Alliance River Assessment Field Team shows water quality issues.  Improvements made to the area include the removal of invasive honeysuckle shrubs, engineered improvements to the berm, and the installation of geotextile and native plants in some areas.  Soil erosion, nutrient loading, and invasive species are all long-term challenges for the lake, and management plans are being developed.

This webinar presented by DNR LARE Program Manager Nate Thomas will revisit information about IN DNR’s Lake and River Enhancement Program (LARE), a cost-share grant program that funds over $2 million dollars annually towards improving Indiana’s lakes, rivers, and watersheds. Topics covered will include introductions of staff, program mission and processes, and past and present projects occurring on Indiana’s natural lakes.

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring the 2026 Indiana Lakes Management Society Annual Conference!  Your support allows us to bring lake association members, government agency representatives, academics, and lake management professionals together to share their knowledge, experiences, and resources regarding the many lakes in Indiana.  Please also consider renewing your membership when you register.

Sponsorship levels and their associated benefits are listed to the left.  All levels except for "Brook" include one complimentary conference registration and an exhibitor space in the main room.  Exhibitor set‐up will occur from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25th.  Each exhibitor will be provided with a 6‐foot table (or similarly sized area for floor displays) and electricity is available upon request.

The conference opens Thursday morning with a plenary speaker and offers two tracks of presentations throughout the day.  Past presentation topics have included lake management case studies, aquatic plant identification, water quality data for the state, and panel discussions of water-related legislation.  (Click here to see last year's schedule.)  Conference registration includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner on Thursday plus breakfast on Friday.

Please note that hotel rooms must be reserved directly with Swan Lake Resort.
